Book 13 of the Cape High Series is a 2-in-1, featuring Windy Girl and Superior Girl.
WINDY GIRL
I AM a freak. Not in a good way, and not just among the norms, either. I’m just as big a freak among the supers, a useless cape. A D-Class, like my sister told me.
There is nowhere I fit in. I’m not going to fit in at this stupid school, either. I don’t even know why I’m here at this stupid tour to begin with--I’ll be flunked out of super school within a week.
“Now, if you will follow me,” Nico says, jerking me back to the present, “I’m going to tell you about the other half of our training.”
“And what would that be?” Aunt Barbara asks.
“The super villain training. Now that we have three of the larger names in teenage villains on the streets, we’ve gotten a bit of a reputation for it,” Nico answers with an evil grin as he leads us past an archery field. “Listen closely, Jennifer, because I think you’ll fit in perfectly there.”
The entire group turns to look at me in shock, but they’re not nearly as shocked as I am.
“What?” I ask finally.
“I’m thinking of making you a super villain,” he says.

SUPERIOR GIRL
“Um, I’m Zoe Rosenthorn-Masters,” I say, looking from them to Century. I hold out a hand, which he takes, engulfing it in a hand that’s as big, if not slightly bigger than Grandpa’s. “This is Kaden,” I add, looking over at the final member of our team. “We’d like to thank you for letting us do this mission--”
“Your father didn’t tell you everything, did he?” Century asks.
“What?” I ask blankly.
“He offered your services in return for letting you three do whatever you wanted,” he tells me. “You see, we’ve got the basics of our own special high school started, but we need the technology to run it--and according to Nico, he won’t let us call it Cape High South unless it’s up to his standards.”
“A sister school?” I ask. “You’re building a sister school?”
Super Girls Cape High Series Book 13 eBook RJ Ross
This is a fun bit of light superhero fiction. I think the writing is, in some important ways, improving. There were one or two earlier ones that just felt a bit shallow and rushed. Super girls is two novellas, really. Both are fast paced, but the stories didn't feel rushed or shortchanged in any way to me. This is still very, very easy reading, but with a little bit more nuanced treatment of characters and their emotions. It's not going to change your life, and it's not going to be reread a dozen times. But! I think the writing is much less simplified than earlier volumes, while remaining just as clear. That's a pretty good accomplishment. And, most importantly (to me), it remains completely free of negative, toxic themes/norms (cynicism about human nature, normalizing terrible behavior, etc), and plot devices (e.g. women as victims) that have become common in modern fiction but make you want to bleach your brain. The series remains positive, enjoyable, and fun. I'm really glad to have some decently written fun fluff; more please!Product details

Super Girls Cape High Series Book 13 eBook RJ Ross Reviews
This is the 13th volume of the Cape High series, and the 13th volume I have bought and devoured in a single setting. Why? Because Ms Ross has created a setting that's believable, and characters you want to spend more time with.
Yes, the setting is a little bit simplistic. Good v Evil is clear-cut and easy to see. Supers are remarkably benevolent, with most "supervillain" activity being more about the show than about actually amassing wealth, power, or influence. But so what? This is a Young Adult series.
One of the things I love about Ms Ross' world is that she has a clear understanding that the set of problems which can be solved by punching the stuffing out of something is much smaller than the set of problems which can be solved by understanding the problem, and extending a hand of friendship and even love to the person involved at the base of the problem. That's refreshing in a world where too often, we dehumanize our opponents.
This is two normal length Cape High books in one, so a great price for the size.
Windy Girl has some great characters, solid dialogue, and embraces the cheerful zaniness that marks this series. The only complaint is that it merely nudges the plot along, and that Doris wasn't used despite a prominent introduction.
Superior Girl reprises Zoe as a mature sixteen. She is still herself, but a mature version. In addition to showing character growth between books, this highlights R J's skill at giving each character their own voice. Additionally, Zoe and Titania wrap up the Mother arc. The healers and Harrold plots are still going, but that's satisfying enough.
This has been one of the longest arcs in the series, but this finish gives it the emotionally gratifying ending readers want. Nicely done.
I love all of these Cape High books. They make me HAPPY, and I hope the author continues writing them as long as possible. She has managed to keep the stories fresh and interesting. One of the reasons I wanted to review this was that I know she had considered abandoning Windy Girl, the first half of this book. I am so glad she didn't. Jennifer's story was terrific. I have read it several times now and I like it more each time. In some ways she is the most like us, being a lowly "D" cape, yet with the help of Nico, Andre, and her new friends she has a wonderful new life opening up in front of her. I also loved Zoe's second story, but it occurred to me while I was rereading the first part that this was a story that was resurrected by Ms. Ross and I really think she turned it into a triumph. Thank you for the hours of pleasure you have given me. I know I will be rereading these for many years to come.
I do like this series. The characters are fun, even though they are all starting to lean heavily towards the one-dimensional side. (more on this later in the review). R.J. is a very good writer, and the story flows well. This was something I could read in one sitting without having to pause often to try to figure out what was happening.
The narrative plotline also advances nicely with events flowing from the previous book and flowing to later scenes in this book. There aren't any really jarring transitions and I haven't run into a scene where I go "wait, that doesn't match what happened earlier."
Those parts made for a good story.
And if that was all I thought, I could almost give this 5 stars (more 4.6 but I'd round up.). Sadly, there are some quibbles I have with the writing.
First, unless you have read the previous books, the characters will likely confuse you as well the plot. The main villain in these 2 books was only introduced a couple of books back, but R.J. clearly assumes that you know who the villain is, and the villain's powers and methods. Even many of the heroes fell into the "I'm assuming the reader knows them already" trap. For me, as I've read and enjoyed the entire series, this wasn't a major problem, but someone unfamiliar with the series will be lost very quickly.
My biggest quibble has to be the fact that R.J. has a rich and beautifully realized world, but can't seem to really do much with it. Characters never get the time to grow properly in the book. The second half of this tale puts Zoe as the main character, making her the first character to get a second time as the focal character, but the intrigue around her swirls so fast that she's mostly a passenger riding the plot and not affecting it much. Worse, I saw a couple plot points appearing that seemed generated solely to extend the length of the tale without actually having to build up any characters.
So while I love reading these stories. I do feel that the characters are thinner than they should be. This drags the tale down to a high 3, which I've rounded up to 4 stars because I do like the series.
I just wish R.J. was willing to challenge her characters a bit more.
(and the fact that romances in this series are light, silly and any character needing a partner seems to find one is entertaining, but it definitely leaves out character growth.)
